 Beautiful People, hosted by Paperfury and Further Up and Further In, is a blog meme. Each month, a fresh set of questions are posted for authors to interview their characters. It's a great way for readers to get a glimpse into the lives of these fictional character. This month, I’m interviewing Ben Parker from Aftermath. As a decorated agent for the Afterworld’s Bureau of Investigation, Ben searched the earth for decades looking for his soul mate, Emma Bennett. When he found her, he decided to go undercover as a high school student to meet her. Let’s see what he has to say today--on this lazy summer edition of Beautiful People! Ben, what is your favorite ice cream flavor? Vanilla Just vanilla? ** He nods. ** Technically, I like an old-fashioned vanilla bean ice cream. Rich and creamy, like they served when I was a kid, back in the 1920's.
I didn’t start my career as a writer. I chose a path in the business world. Writing was a hobby—something fun for me to do on nights and weekends, or whenever my family had other activities that didn’t involve me. The occasional jotting notes in a journal, evolved into a regular writing ritual, complete with story arch and critique partners.
My hour-here-and-there, changed to nights and weekends, with Sundays being “my” day. For that, I want to thank my family for allowing me that opportunity… for going golfing on a Sunday afternoon, so I can write, uninterrupted… for the encouragement to pursue a crazy dream at a moment I thought of giving up… and for the continued support you give me each and every day. A huge shout out to Mike, Brittany, and Kyle… I love you!

 The 4th of July has always had double meaning for me. Aside from it being our country's celebration of our independence, it was my father’s birthday. He died when I was very young—too young for me to remember the sound of his voice, his sense of humor, or whether he was a morning person or not. I don’t know if he liked mushrooms or Brussels sprouts, if he preferred steak over chicken, or beer instead of wine. I have no idea what his favorite color was, or preferred hobby. But, there isn’t a day that goes by that I didn’t think of him. I used to wonder what my life would have been like, if he hadn’t died. Would he have been a strict dad, scaring boys away? Or, a cool, popular one that neighbor kids flocked to? Realizing that I’ll never know was crushing. But, there are a few things I do know—things I remembered, stories I’ve heard. I treasure those memories and feel lucky to have known him—even if it was just a short amount of time. I know he loved me, and that warms my heart and brings tears to my eyes even today—decades after I lost him. Happy birthday, dad! I love you.
